A Sweet Sip of History: An Exploration of Bourbon

A Sweet Sip of History: An Exploration of Bourbon.

Every sip of bourbon takes you back in time, allowing you to experience firsthand the deeply-rooted history of this native American spirit. Originally crafted in the 18th century as a signature style of whiskey, bourbon has become a favorite of whiskey drinkers worldwide. For many, bourbon is much more than a beverage; it’s a way to connect with the past, one cherished recipe at a time.

At its core, bourbon is simply whiskey. To be labeled as a true bourbon, the recipe must follow a strict set of rules. It must be made from at least 51% corn with the remaining 49% made up of barley, rye and wheat. The mash must also be aged in new, charred oak barrels. Many of these rules were outlined in the Bottled-in-Bond Act of 1897, ensuring the purity and authenticity of the whiskey. The act also stipulates that the spirit must come from a single distiller and must be aged in a bonded warehouse for at least 4 years.

Bourbon has played a significant role in the history of the United States. Distillers had been producing whiskey since the early days of the nation. However, it was Kentucky that would prove to be the home of bourbon. With an abundance of grain and limestone-rich land, the state provided an ideal environment for the perfect concoction of water, sugar and grain.

By the mid-1800s, bourbon had become a staple American spirit. It was a popular social lubricant and an integral part of the economy, with over 240 distilleries operating in Kentucky by the time of prohibition. Despite the prohibition, bootlegging and illegal production of spirits continued on the sly.

Following prohibition, many distilleries began crafting lighter, blended whiskeys that quickly became the standard. It wasn’t until the 1970s, when the craft spirits industry exploded, that the bold flavor and unique character of genuine bourbon returned to our glasses.

These days, drinking bourbon has become a way of life for many, with new brands and styles constantly emerging. From small-batch bourbons to single-barrel bourbons, drinkers are able to explore a variety of flavors and sensations. In addition to providing a multitude of options, the bourbon craze has also allowed many new distillers to join the mix.

Bourbon has truly become one of the most intriguing, delicious and celebrated spirits in the world. Whether you savor it over ice, neat or in your favorite cocktail, you can’t go wrong. So, raise your glass and indulge in the sweet sip of bourbon history. Cheers!
