While it is difficult to get exactly right the first time, a basic understanding of brewing and the right equipment will help even the most beginner home brewer have success in creating the perfect brew.
Everything a person needs to know to brew beer can be broken down into four easy steps: gathering equipment, selecting the ingredients, actual brewing, and bottling. All of these steps work together to create a delicious and satisfying beer.
Equipment Needed
When it comes to gathering equipment, there are several items that you must have. First, you need a large pot (five to 10 gallons) and a strainer to strain spent grains. A thermometer to get the temperature of the wort is also essential, and any other monitoring tools such as hydrometer and refractometer will come in handy. Other useful equipment items include a fermentation bucket, air-tight lids, measuring equipment, and siphon.
In addition to the necessary equipment, there are also some optional tools that can help make the brewing process easier. These items include a wort chiller, auto-siphon, bottling bucket, and bottle crusher or capper.
Selecting Ingredients
Once you have all the necessary equipment, it’s time to start thinking about the ingredients. The first and most important is the malt extract. There are several varieties of malt that you can choose from and the selection process will largely depend on the type of beer you’re hoping to make. Make sure to stir the mixture regularly while it is boiling to prevent burning. After the boil is finished, allow the wort to cool to 70-80 degrees Fahrenheit, and then transfer it to the fermentation vessel.
Add the yeast and top off the fermentation vessel with cool water until it is at the correct volume. Be sure to cover the fermentation vessel with an air-tight lid and store it in a cool, dark place. Allow the beer to ferment for 1-2 weeks before bottling.
Bottling
Bottling is the final step in the process. To bottle the beer, simply fill the bottles with the wort, leaving about an inch of headspace at the top. Use a priming sugar to carbonate the beer, and then cap the bottles.
To encourage bottle conditioning, store the bottles at room temperature for two weeks to allow the yeast to finish fermenting. Once the yeast is finished fermenting, they can be moved to a refrigerated storage space. After a few weeks in the refrigerator, the brewed beer will be ready to enjoy.
